Description

1814 Great Pair Austrian .812 Silver Open Salt Cellars w/Cloven Hoof Feet
Presented is a lovely pair of Austrian silver open salt cellars. These salts date to 1814. The salts are done in an oval form, with cabriole legs ending in cloven hoof feet. The legs have a fanned foliate decoration where they join the body. The rims of the salts have a beaded design. The interiors have a rich gold wash. The salts come with spoons which are a marriage but match admirably in style, with similar beading and foliate designs. The salts have no monograms, while the spoons have a B on the handle.
The salts are in great condition. There are no splits, no breaks, no dents, no monograms, no monogram removals, and no repairs. The spoons are also in great condition. The details of the pattern are nice and crisp. The spoons have no splits, no dents, no monogram removals, and no repairs.
The underside of each salt is hallmarked with the Austrian mark with 13 for the purity of the silver (13 loth=812 purity), the date 1814, and the letter F at the top for the city of Brno. There is also an assay mark, with the F above the conjoined TF, and a maker’s mark that looks like possibly FJ in interwoven script. Each spoon is stamped Lunt & sterling.
Each salt measures about 3 by 2 by 1 7/8 inches, LxWxH. Each spoon is about 3 5/8 inches long.
The total weight for the set is 211 grams or 7.4 regular ounces.
